Cici Blames South African Law System For The Abuse Of Women
Singer Busisiwe Thwala famously known as Cici released an afro-pop song titled Iqiniso a while back. In the song the singer expressed the agony she felt when she was allegedly abused by her former lover and boss Kwaito legend Arthur Mafokate. Their situation got so worse that the other spent a night in hospital while the otherspent it in jail. They laid charges of assault against each other, their case is set to take place next month, August.
Cici was in an interview at Gagasi FM where she revealed how abuse has become in South Africa. “Abuse is a pandemic in this country that people have gotten too used to, the law that governs this country does not protect us. That’s why people don’t go to the police, because the law is not totally on board. That needs to change,” said the Iqiniso singer.
The songbird went through an experience that most women have gone through in the country. According to the Statics SA conducted on May 2017 by Marriane Merten the survey shows that 17% of younger women aged 18 to 24 had experienced violence from a partner, 2.1% described this as often, and 8% as sometimes – compared to 16.7% among women 65 years old and older.Separated and divorced women were more likely to experience violence (40%), followed by those living together (31.1%). While there was no statistically significant difference between urban and rural areas, the survey noted, women in the poorest households (24.4%) were more likely to experience physical violence compared to the top earning homes (13%).
Most would agree with Cici that the rapid growth of female abuse is caused by the justice system that often fails to do right by victims, one would also argue and say that women choose to remain in abusive relationships. No matter the case, It is the big issue that South Africa is facing and need to deal with.
