Riky Rick Explains Why He Calls Himself A Kwaito Artist
Rapper and Fashionista Riky Rick has expressed his views on and about South African music and stressed the he thinks of himself as more of a Kwaito artist.
The cotton-eater went on to say that in South Africa most artists don’t make songs that people from other countries across the world would understand they make songs that can be understood by their neighbors and culture. “In South Africa, we don’t make songs for the world you know. We literally make songs for our neighborhood and our culture which is like good for South African people as a tradition but it’s bad because a lot of people outside never get to understand. So it takes a while for it to build,” he explained in an interview with UK’s publication Pause Magazine.
Sidl’ukotin hit-maker added to his statement and explained further why he feels his music is more Kwaito than Hip Hop. “My music is eclectic and a bit confused in some sense. I’m like a Kwaito artist, Kwaito is like my main genre. Kwaito is basically rapping in our own language, Zulu or whatever it is and creating a vibe out of that,” he said.
Riky is one of few SA artist who have expanded their brands across the world in various places, if he is not performing his hit songs he is out showcasing the fashion that he is most admired for. Despite the SA language he mostly use in his music, the rapper has fans in most parts of the world, they sing along to his songs no matter their ethnicity.
