Details on Abdullah Ibrahim’s Upcoming performances in SA set to take place on the 13th and 14th of October. Legendary South African most celebrated pianist Abdullah is set to perform in Cape town at the Artscape Theatre this coming weekend, he will be presenting a solo piano concert on both days. According to press statement the event will be showcasing his seventy years in music through the influence of people, places and events that have impacted his life and career as a pianist.
At the age of 80 hailed as a king of Jazz Abdullah still tours across the world but when he is not touring he spends his time in New York and Cape Town. Ibrahim is not his born name, he was born Dollar Brand but later joined an Islamic religion and changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim. Coming from a musical family had an influence on the passion and talent he grew to have of music. While living in Cape Town he was exposed to American jazz, township jive, Cape Malay music, as well as to classical music. The pianist have even performed on Mandela’s inauguration back in 1994.
Abdullah sure plans to live a good name and legacy behind, he also took an initiative to help young people musically. He established a South African production company, Masingita (Miracle), and a music academy, M7, offering courses in seven disciplines to educate young minds and bodies. He is proving to the world that Age is indeed just a number and that it can never stop one from striving to reach for the stars.
One interesting detail about him is that he has a black belt in martial arts accompanied with an interest in zen philosophy, he takes every rising opportunity to visit his master in private trips to Japan. A man full of surprises indeed.
