Relebogile Mabotja Drops Debut EP “Still Me” at 40

Media powerhouse Relebogile Mabotja has officially entered the music scene with her debut EP, “Still Me”. The project, released on September 5 to coincide with her 40th birthday, marks a new chapter for the multi-talented entertainer.

While this is Mabotja’s first official musical release, she is no stranger to music. The radio host and composer has contributed to the industry for years, producing and performing music that has reached national audiences. She is the voice behind the theme songs for Africa Magic and the Lotto anthem “One Day is One Day”.

Mabotja’s early work includes her contribution to The African Alphabet, which earned her a South African Music Awards (Sama) nomination in 2010. In 2011, she won a Sama for Best Kiddies Album with African Treehouse. She later composed music for SABC 2’s You Belong rebrand, and produced title music for shows such as Afro Café, Nedbank’s Ke Yona: Making the Team, Making Moves, and Sunday Chillas.

Announcing the EP on Instagram, Mabotja described “Still Me” as a gift to herself and a celebration of her creative journey.

“‘Still Me’ is my birthday gift to myself, my first musical offering. I’ve never allowed myself to be this exposed, and today, I do so proudly,” she wrote.

The songs were created in 2020 during lockdown, a period she describes as freeing and introspective. “I’ve sat with this music for years, battling perfectionism and fear of being this vulnerable. But turning 40 means honouring myself beyond fear, beyond pressure, beyond the need for validation,” she explained.

Produced by Chadwin Alexander, the EP features five tracks. The closing song is a medley of hymns familiar to many South Africans, while the other tracks carry jazzy tones with gospel influences. Lyrically, the EP explores self-discovery, love, and letting go. It also includes a collaboration with singer RJ Benjamin, who has previously worked with her.

Beyond music, “Still Me” reflects courage and self-expression. Mabotja shared that the project allows her son to witness her living fully and pursuing her passions.

Through “Still Me,” Mabotja returns to her first love of music, showing a new side of her artistry while celebrating a milestone birthday. The EP positions her as a bold and versatile creative, ready to leave a lasting mark on South African music.
