The KING of Gugulethu gets his break.
We are glad to hear the Mother city has been delightful and gratifying to Berlin, Lui Hill and the cherry on top is the South African born and bred – Khofhi. He has experienced dreadful experiences in his life. Nothing seemed to go his way.
He was healing following a lengthy relationship being unsuccessful and on top of everything he had to face another dismay. He had a record distribution turn bitter. It looks like tragedy continued to elevate in his life; the passing of his Father added salt to his wounds, and they were close. He initially travelled to South Africa proceeding a series of adversities in his life.
“I wasn’t running away from my problems as they follow you no matter where you go. Travelling just helps you to get to know yourself better, creates distance and gets you closer to the core of things,” he says.
When he was in Cape Town, Hill met Tobias Herder of Filter Music Group, he came to Cape Town to sign another performance. Things have a way of turning to your favour no matter how tragic it gets in life. What happens next is thrilling, Tobias alternately came back with Lui’s signature, from there life came to a change.
Although things did not end there, the blessing of meeting Tobias was not his only predestined encounter. He discovered the artist Khofhi while sauntering through the Gardens, his ears heard a splendid sound that blasted him away. After that encounter, they introduced him to South African Khofhi known as The King of Gugulethu.
Lui left for Berlin to passionately pursue his music career further but returned to Cape Town a year later for another visit: “While I was back, I naturally ended up at the V&A Waterfront at some stage. And behold, I once again heard the incredible music that I heard the year before. I knew I just had to meet him this time. I introduced myself to Khofhi, we started talking, which led to a collaboration that would change both our lives forever. Together, we wrote and recorded the song, Rusty Strings which we’re incredibly excited about releasing as a single internationally,” Lui states.
