Shota On Making Sacrifice’s To Care For Son With Eye Cancer – Shota Mnqobi and his wife, Phumeza Mdabe, have previously expressed concerning their sacrifices made to look after their son, Mpilo, who was diagnosed with eye cancer in 2014.
Following the diagnosis, and observing seen him losing an eye to the disease, Shota and Phumeza had to deal with a strenuous decision when doctors revealed Mpilo was not responding to treatment and they had no choice but to extract his other eye.
In an interview recently, Shota and Phumeza explained following the surgeries their son received prosthetic eyes that cost R50,000. While the medical bills piled up, the couple cut down on luxuries.
Their journey was not an easy one when Shona mirrors on the experience, Shota confessed that sometimes it was tough to stay strong: “The house became so heavy. Sometimes I’d feel like turning around and not going home.”
Although, things are much better now, the pair has since been back in the spotlight and released a song together, clearly in a much better space than before. Mpilo has been in remission for almost three years and has been accepted into Grade R at Holy Family College in Parktown, Johannesburg.
They have also established a foundation titled the Mpilo Foundation, which will assist other children who have been afflicted with the same condition.
