Top 10 Black Coffee’s Career Achievements & Highlights 2019 – Black Coffee, real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo, has not only raised the bar for South African house music but has put it on the world map.

The multi-award-winning artist was born in South Africa’s house music province, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), raised in the Eastern Cape province, where struggle stalwart Nelson Mandela hailed from, before moving back to KZN to study music. It was worth it.

1. BET Award

Black Coffee is the first South African artist to win the BET Award, with previous winners including Diamond Platnumz, PSquare, Ice Prince and Davido. Humble about his win, Black Coffee has always been grounded. And despite his burgeoning fan base, which includes big names in entertainment, he still maintains a level-headedness that is rare in artists of his calibre.

3. Deep house Winner At International DJ Awards

Local DJ Black Coffee has walked away as the winner of the Deep House DJ category at the international DJ Awards.  

Founded by Ibiza organizer Jose Pascual and producer and record label owner Lenny Krarup, the DJ Awards has been the only one of its kind since 1998.  

4. Awarded Best Video For Drive-In France

Internationally – renowned DJ and record-producer Black Coffee remains unstoppable and is always winning at this life thing. As always, the 43-year-old muso from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape made Mzansi proud when won best music video for the song Drive at Club TV awards in France.

5. His Break Through Award

In September 2015, he won the “Breakthrough DJ of the Year” award at the DJ Awards in Ibiza.

6. Collaborated with Usher for Lala

DJ Black Coffee has teamed up with American R&B star, Usher, on a hot new collaboration. The South African DJ dropped his latest song, ‘LaLaLa’ on Tuesday and it is all kinds of amazing. 

Their collaboration comes two years after Black Coffee revealed that Usher once declined to work with him because he was not “African enough”. We are glad they eventually got to work together because ‘LaLaLa’ is a jam of note.

7. Partied With Beyonce & Jay Z

We will forever be eternally grateful to DJ Black Coffee who, despite the ridiculously private couple’s wishes to never share unless they feel like it, posted a video of Beyoncé speaking into a microphone and singing ‘a happy birthday’ to her husband, with the help of the crowd who was in attendance.

8. Black Coffee Plans To Build A School

DJ Black Coffee has been taking over the world one African-inspired electro beat at a time. He has become friends with many industry heavyweights, including the newly appointed Louis Vuitton menswear artistic director Virgil Abloh. They are now joining forces and opening an art school in South Africa.

The DJ spoke to Billboard and mentioned how the art school, which will be based in Johannesburg, would be designed by his friend Virgil.
