Top 5 Controversial Musicians In 2019 – Many celebrities cause controversy, simply by nature of their fame — but some scandals are far more consequential than others.
SA Music Mag rounded up a list of musicians/ public figures who were involved in some of the biggest controversies of the year.
Here are the top 5 of 2019’s most controversial stars, in no particular order.
1 Mampintsha
Assault accused Mandla Maphumulo, popularly known as Mampintsha, sought to discredit his girlfriend Babes Wodumo, accusing her of staging the attack which was streamed live on the singer’s Instagram account.
Maphumulo was arrested and granted bail of R2,000.
He was arrested following Babes Wodumo, real name Bongekile Simelane, laid a criminal complaint against him. The course dragged for months to missing court dates and re-uniting with Babes and doing tours together immediately after the whole country stood with Babes Wodumo.
Durban-based musician Mampintsha, Also finally addressed rumours surrounding his mysterious weight loss. Following fans accusing him of sickness and other ills connected to what might be the reason behind his slim physic.
Black Twitter trolled him, even accusing him of taking illicit drugs, Big Nuz star explained to his fans that he is happy with his current weight and rubbished the social media speculation that he is sick.
2. Babes Wodumo
Gqom musician Babes Wodumo and long-time boyfriend Mampintsha have been at the centre of abuse speculation for several months.
On a Monday, in the previous month video footage of what appeared to show Babes Wodumo allegedly being assaulted by her boyfriend Mampintsha was widely spread on social media.
Metro FM DJ Masechaba Ndlovu received backlash last year after she confronted Babes on live radio about domestic abuse allegations that she apparently endured at the hands of Mampintsha.
Masechaba claimed that she had a friend who had taken Babes in when Mampintsha allegedly punched her in the face and broke her leg.
Babes Wodumo was very emotional in the interview which resulted in backlash against Masechaba and her being let go from Metro Fm.
Babes also was slammed by social media users after a video was shared online of a woman, believed to be her, poking fun at Lady Zamar’s acne during her appearance on hit reality TV music competition Idols SA. “You’re busy laughing at this child on Idols and your face is like this,” the woman could be heard saying.
3. Black Coffee
What started as rumour and speculation has been confirmed. DJ Black Coffee and his wife, Enhle Mbali, are getting divorced. Enhle confirmed this in a video statement on Instagram on Sunday.
The pair were engaged in 2010. They had a traditional wedding a year later and a white wedding in 2017. City Press reported in July that the couple had split, but the pair refused to confirm the claims.
Divorce rumours have been circulating for months. Earlier this year, there were rumours that Black Coffee was having an affair with David Guetta’s ex-wife, Cathy Lobé, after she posted a video of her and Black Coffee hugging.
Black Coffee took to Twitter to deny the claims, saying Cathy was “nothing more than a business partner and shall remain so for the foreseeable future”.
4. DJ Fresh
A statement was released by the SABC on Tuesday, the 9th of July 2019, explicating that they have concluded to let the DJ go after “unsuccessful engagements” and DJ Fresh’s behaviour in escorting the broadcaster into disgrace.
DJ Fresh’s used the word “msunery” in response to a listener’s comments during an interview with Khanya Mkangisa on May the 20th. He was first suspended from His Metro Fm – FreshBreakfastShow, then officially fired.
Also, the radio host was accused of illicit sexual advances and DJ, Fresh repudiated the claims made against him on his social media account. This was revealed on the campaign #AMINEXT, in which alleged survivors of sexual assault and rape named their alleged attackers. DJ Fresh took to social media and shared a statement published across his social media platforms.
He contested the claims, asserting as an individual, who has been thriving in the entertainment industry for years. He has carefully thought of himself as a vessel and a voice for the unheard.
5. DJ Sbu
Multi award-winning afro-pop singer Zahara trended for a few weeks after she came out guns blazing, accusing her former record label of owing her millions.
TS Records boss DJ Sbu, who co-owned the label with Thembinkosi Nciza, has responded to these allegations that have hogged headlines this week.
In an Instagram post the business man attached a statement which allegedly shows that their closed down label, TS Records, does not owe Zahara millions as she claims.
DJ Sbu has received major backlash after saying he is the continent’s ambassador for hip-hop music during a speech at a memorial site in Los Angeles held in honour of US rapper, Nipsey Hussle.
