Top 5 SA Female DJ’s In 2019 – The entertainment industry is a difficult place in which to carve out a career, and attempting to navigate this patriarchal, charlatan-filled landscape is all the more trying as a young female.

Being a successful DJ, playing all over the world and winning various awards for your work means breaking barriers set in front of you and yet our ladies are constantly making us proud.

1. DJ Zinhle

DJ Zinhle

DJ Zinhle born Ntombezinhle Jiyane, is a South African deejay who served as the resident DJ on the SABC1 music show Jika Majika and hosted her own radio show on YFM. She is also an actress, having appeared on television series like Rhythm City and eKasi. She was born on December 30, 1983 in Dannhauser, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

She stepped onto the South African DJ scene at a time when it was still very much of a man’s world, but this talented lady quickly managed to turn some heads with her crazy skills on the decks. She even grabbed the attention of some of Mzansi’s most respected DJs, such as DJ Oskido, and has today become one of the best female house DJs in SA.

2. DJ CNDO

Real name Sindisiwe Zungu born 1984 at Mandeni just 45mins outside of Durban next to the great river Uthukela. While studying at Mangosuthu Technikon she developed an interest in DJing and started learning how to mix at Durbans Finest DJ Academy situated at Chilli Soul 320 West Street – Durban. Soon as she had mastered mixing she was seen playing in every gig at Mangosuthu Technikon mixing better than most male DJs.

You might have seen Cndo in Jika Majika as she was featured as a resident DJ for 13 episodes when the programme was recording Durban talent. She also appeared on SABC 1 programme Seskhona when they were showing the event Durban Rocks 2006, one of the best events that attracted more than 5000 people 16 December 2006. Her first work was seen on the Gagasi FM compilation where she recorded a song with Professor the producer of Woze Durban – T’zozo En Professor. 

3. Ms Cosmo

Born in Diepkloof, Soweto, Ms Cosmo, whose real name is Nonqaba Nozuko Rwaxa, fell in love with hip-hop from a very young age, She was influenced by her cousin who loved the music genre.

When She first started interacting with music, her cousin used to play a lot of hip-hop tunes. She would always be going to these cool parties, and I used to get jealous wondering why I was staying behind.

The star recalls mimicking dances on music videos and trying to rap along to most of the songs she heard growing up.

4. Miss Pru

After a decade of being in the entertainment industry, Miss Pru is still going strong. The DJ has marked her name with golden letters as she clocks a decade of spinning decks.

She dropped jaws and turned heads in 2016 following the release of her multiple award-winning song, Ameni featuring the likes of Sjava, Emtee, Saudi, Fifi Cooper, A-Reece and B3nchMarQ. She has also blessed people’s ears with hits like Isaga LamiPhumelelaUgesiWelele and Wena Wedwa.

5. DBN GOGO

The 27-year-old Durban native is currently the hottest DJ in the game. Real name Mandisa Radebe, DBN Gogo undoubtedly owns 2019 on the decks.

She’s forever booked and was busy even during the chilly winter season. It’s getting even busier as the warmer weather heightens the party season. And playing the  Basha Uhuru, Rocking the Daisies, Home Coming Africa, among headline events this year, this month she’ll be activating audience members at the MTV Strongbow BIG Picnic – on November 30.
