SA Musicians Who Died In 2019 – In the year 2019 Mzansi has already faced several downtimes with the loss of much-loved stars. 

Death is never easy. It is always complicated. You are alive and the person you love isn’t. You do not know how to react or live life without them anymore. It is hard.

The only way I have been able to deal with death is with prayer. I heartily pray that wherever they are they find peace and happiness. I do this whenever I remember my loved ones. It has helped me tremendously and I am sure it can help others deal with their grief also.

1. Nichume Siwundla

ocal singer Nichume Siwundla has died after an apparent suicide a statement sent on behalf of her record label, Top Chap Media, confirmed on Friday. 

The singer, well known for featuring on Mobi Dixon’s track Buthiza, hailed from the Eastern Cape and was also a qualified ophthalmologist. 

“Nichume was found at a friend’s place last night following an apparent suicide,” the statement reads. 

2. Johnny Clegg

Legendary South African singer Johnny Clegg died at his family home in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon. He was 66.

Clegg was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015. Clegg was one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He was a singer, a songwriter, a dancer, anthropologist and a musical activist whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, exploded onto the international scene and contributed immensely towards social cohesion in the young South African democracy. 

3. Thami Shobede

Thami Shobede was suffering from depression when he collapsed while performing on stage about a week ago and later died. 

According to his mother Mantombi Buthelezi, who told Sunday Times, he was admitted to hospital for observation last Friday because he was feeling weak, she still did not know what caused his death.

Buthelezi said, “The doctor told us he was suffering from depression. I wasn’t really surprised but I didn’t think it would lead to this. On Monday he was fine but on Thursday he gave in.”

She further told the publication that her son’s sudden illness could have come from the pressure she believed he was under as the family’s sole breadwinner.

4. DOROTHY MASUKA 

Veteran jazz musician Dorothy Masuka died at the age of 83.

Dorothy had been suffering from complications related to hypertension after suffering a mild stroke last year. “She was in the comfort of her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren,” said family spokesperson Fortune Hute.

Hute said that Masuka would be remembered for staying true to herself and her craft.

5. Neyi Zimu

Just weeks after being admitted to hospital with skin cancer, gospel star and pastor Neyi Zimu has died.

The news was confirmed on Twitter by EFF leader Floyd Shivambu.

“Rest In Peace Pastor Neyi Zimu!” he tweeted.

The 49-year-old musician was undergoing chemotherapy to treat a rare blood cancer that affects the skin when he passed away on Wednesday evening.
