On Saturday, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation publicised the extradited 29 South African music artists that were in turkey. The statement says that the people extradited were supposed to fly back home when flights were grounded due to the pandemic.
The musicians are stated to be from disadvantaged backgrounds. “These artists are said to be from disadvantaged backgrounds and were unable to afford the airfare on a Turkish Air flight that was flying to South Africa on 22 May 2020,” says the statement from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. The musicians were part of a group of 93 South Africans given the go ahead to get a flight to South Africa by the Turkish government to fly the South African citizens stranded in the country.
The artists got back on home soil on the 22nd of May, they were also taken to a government facility for compulsory quarantine. “As government, we are honoured to have played a role in showing care to our own. We are happy that our young practitioners will be back on home soil and soon reunited with their families.
