South African musicians have been having quite a tough time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some of the musicians have received help from the government and the parties they support. However, some of the artists such as Simphiwe Dana haven’t received any financial assistance.
Simphiwe Dana went on social media to speak about the issue at hand. She says that she is still waiting for a reply 70 days later since the lockdown. She also tagged the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. “…it’s now been over 70 days since lockdown, I haven’t gotten a response to my Covid proposal. Could you update us on what the holdup now is,” says Simphiwe Dana. She then went on to tag the minister because he is active on Twitter.
“Maybe [Nathi Mthethwa] will help. He’s more present on twitter than the ministerial account. We need answers and to not be ignored by our department. We haven’t made money most of this year,” says Simphiwe Dana. The minister asked the singer to send the email address she used so they could do a follow up on the issue. The minister also wrote the message for other artists and actors that did not receive their relief fund. Actress Nokuthula is an entertainment industry professional who penned an open letter to the minister.
