South African music group ‘The Shabs’ were left in tough situation when they were stuck in Europe because of the coronavirus. The band was having their music tour in Europe. They had approximately six music gigs covered and a few others that they still had to do when the pandemic stopped everything.

Ryan McArthur, band representative, says that they got notifications of their gigs being cancelled while they were on the road in Germany. The group was hoping to get back to the Czech Republic so that they could catch their flight back home once they were done with the tour. They then discovered that the Czech Republic had closed it’s borders as a response to fight against the current coronavirus. The group left a van that they rented in a random parking space in Hamburg because they have no way of taking it back. Their instruments are secured by different people in the area.

The South African music band got the chance to get back to Mzansi one week before the country had a national lockdown. The band was in debt because they had to get new flights and lost out on potential income from the gigs that were cancelled. “We had to borrow money and get into debt to get back home,” says Ryan Murphy. The band representative went on to say that the money they had didn’t even break even. The band had to then start a crowdfund so that they could pay their debt.

The group raised over R80 000. The group released a music video for their song titled ‘I Feel Alive’. This was their way of thanking the people that assisted them, the music video includes video recordings sent by over 130 people that helped the group.
