World acclaimed house music DJ and music producer Black Coffee seems to be in trouble with his taxes, according to City Press. The publication reports that the musician sent legal documents to the Johannesburg High Court as of recent. He may owe the South African Revenue Services millions of rands.
The court documents reportedly state that he was being evaluated to pay income tax arrears amounting to R40 million by the South African Revenue Services. He was thus able to negotiate that the income tax arrears be reduced to R8 million. According to City Press, the statement states that Black Coffee agreed with the South African Revenue Services on disposing his immovable properties to get funds for the owed R8 million, to avoid the attachment of his properties. “Considering the nature of his business, it is impossible to predict or state his average monthly income due to the fact that it fluctuates substantially as a result of not only market forces, but also the seasonality of the industry,” says Black Coffee’s statement.
Peter Tshisevhe, finance lawyer, chairperson and co-founder of Tshisevhe Gwina Ratshimbilani Incorporate says that celebs don’t normally choose to defraud the South African Revenue Services. “Most of them are good at what they do but they are not exposed to the business side of the entertainment business and they always fail to manage their finances,” says Peter Tshisevhe.
