Some musicians have been struggling to make ends meet because of the lockdown that has been going on in South Africa. The musicians are not able to go to gigs because they have been excluded, some have stated that the relief fund won’t help them because it’s too little. So, some brands have come out to help out the musicians by paying them for online concerts.
However, the payments that some of the brands have been promising the musicians is not a good amount of money. Busiswa went on to speak about the issue on social media. “So many platforms asking artists to perform on their streaming concerts for menial amounts under the guise of ‘helping out’…you want content for your online platforms, pay the talent please. It’s even embarrassing that in 2020 you use the word ‘exposure’ to garner talent.” She carries on saying that when it is big brands it is shameful.
“When it’s big brands it’s shameful honestly. You know the desperation currently and you outright using it to take advantage. No ma’am,” says Busiswa. DJ Zinhle also recently spoke about the issue she had with performing for free, saying that she gets offended when a reputable company asks for a free performance.
