It was recently announced that R&B sensation Elaine is signed under international recording label Columbia Records. The musician is signed along with huge international stars such as Beyoncé and Adele. The Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, went on social media to congratulate her on the milestone.
“We’re proud to hear the news that South African R&B sensation [Elaine] has signed with [Columbia Records], joining global icons such as Beyoncé & Adele. Her hit song ‘You’re the one’ has over 2,7 million views on YouTube. We’re incredibly proud of your achievements,” says Nathi Mthethwa. However, his congratulatory message didn’t go as planned as social media users bashed at the minister for supposedly not caring about artists till something good happens in their careers. Some social media users accused the Ministers department of not giving musicians relief in these tough lockdown times. “This reminds me of deadbeat dads celebrating with you when you’ve reached a milestone but haven’t done anything to contribute to your achievement. Do better,” says one social media user.
One user says, “You’re always so proud to hear the news instead of helping creatives.” One user says, “You were never going to support her craft in any way whatsoever.” One social media user says, “Proud of Elaine no doubt…But I hate how Arts & Culture always wants to somehow recognise us after we make it ourselves…We knock on your doors for financial help with our art you ignore us…We fund ourselves we make it and suddenly you know us?…its tiring.”
