Kelly Khumalo has recently released a music video with her face darkened. The musician received a lot of criticism on social media from social media users. She thus responded to the criticism, stating that she hopes one day people would be able to look past her complexion.
The musician was filming the ‘Empini’ music video when she was darkened out. She was apparently meant to portray Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of protection. The musician has told TshisaLive that she did not mean to offend anyone. “I knew criticism would come. I cannot blame them, a lot has happened where black people are concerned. It is such a shame that we see everything as a threat against our skin colour, even something as simple as art,” says Kelly Khumalo. She says that ‘Empini’ is just art.
She thus explained the history of African warriors, stating that they would camouflage themselves to a point of darkening their skin when needed during war. The musician recently released another single from her album titled ‘Esphambanweni’ featuring Hlengiwe Mhlaba.
