Nanette Prepares to Release New Album ‘Painfully Happy’

R&B songstress Nanette, born Sphesihle Nobethu Mbili Jolobe, is entering an exciting new phase in her career. The 23-year-old singer shared insights about her upcoming album, “Painfully Happy,” during an interview with Independent Media Lifestyle.
Having worked with artists like Kelvin Momo, The Big Hash, and the Major League DJz, and releasing her debut album “Bad Weather” in 2022, Nanette has already achieved significant milestones. Her latest single, “Abazali,” reflects a fresh sound, blending Soweto funk with jazzy-infused R&B.
“I had never tapped into that sound before, so it was out of my comfort zone. Still, because I’m a South African who grew up listening to good music, and I listened to our greats, it wasn’t hard to make the song,” she said.
“‘Abazali’ is inspired by my upbringing and the sacrifices parents make for their children. I wanted a song that the elders would listen to and feel nostalgic afterwards.” The track has resonated with fans due to its homegrown feel and relatable themes.
Nanette chose to release the single during Women’s Month to honour the strength of women who serve as parents and breadwinners. “Myself, having been raised by my grandmother, knew firsthand the strength and sacrifice mothers and fathers made for us as their children,” she explained.
The singer believes “Abazali” has the potential to gain global recognition as a classic R&B track, highlighting universal themes such as love, grief, joy, acceptance, growth, and womanhood. She credits her growth, confidence, and experience for shaping her sound and elevating the production quality of her music.
Looking ahead, Nanette aims to win a Grammy, perform on multiple continents, and leave a lasting legacy through her music and intentional storytelling. She advises young artists to stay honest with themselves, be patient, and speak positively, emphasizing the power of words in shaping a music career.
Fans can expect numerous performances and visuals from the album, as the “Call You” singer prepares to deliver an impactful era. Recently, she was featured on Apple Music’s Alpha cover, which she described as a proud and encouraging moment. “Being celebrated amongst other excellent women was equally rewarding,” she said.
