Busiswa Opens Up About Past Abusive Relationships

Busiswa Opens Up About Past Abusive Relationships. Abuse has become a huge issue in South Africa.

Abuse has become a huge issue in South Africa. It was reported that during lockdown the number of gender-based violence incidents had risen. Internationally acclaimed musician Busiswa went on her IGTV on Monday to speak about her abuse incidents from her past two relationships.

The musician uploaded a three videos on her Instagram. She states that the first incident was with Sfiso Mazibuko, who abused her mentally, emotionally and physically, and the second one was with the father of her baby Katlego Mlangeni, who abused her emotionally, financially and physically. The baby daddy even came after they broke up. “…he came after me four months after our break up to beat me up once again after seeing me out with someone else,” says Busiswa.

She states that she created the video to help woman that may find themselves in the same situation. “When I first got hit by a man, my first thoughts were not anger but pity. I was in love and I thought that the person I was in love with was going through some things and I felt I needed to help them get through those things,” says the musician. She went through therapy, anger management classes, the elders and pray. She did this in hope to put a stop to the gender-based violence. She let women know that it’s not their fault. “I’m here to say ladies who are in abusive relationships or who’ll ever come across that situation, God forbid. You can’t. It’s not your place, it’s not your responsibility, it’s not your job to change an abuser,” says Busiswa.

She kept her abuse story a secret for some time because she was scared of what people would think. Sometimes, the ex would assault her right before she was about to step on stage. “I performed for thousands at shows, sometimes immediately after I had been slapped. This happened to me many times and my focus was-to just go out there and put on a brave face, put on a brave face, put on a smile and I was ashamed that I would now turn around and tell people that I was in a toxic and abusive relationship. I realised now, that it’s not me. It is not your fault. You do not deserve to be abused.”
