Media personality and club DJ Lerato Kganyago slammed a tweep for not doing research on the good work that she has done for women in the fight against period poverty. This comes after the club DJ commented on the news of Scotland making free access to period products a legal right. She thus tagged President Cyril Ramaphosa’s account asking as to why the South African government cannot do this too.
“If Scotland can do this, why can’t we [President Cyril Ramaphosa – every girl child and women who struggles to have access to sanitary products looks up to you to help us make period poverty history,” says Lerato Kganyago. Some social media users loved that the musician asked the president to take a step of action in ending period poverty. However, one social media user replied by stating that the media personality and club DJ should also contribute her sanitary pads instead of selling them.
The social media got a clap back from the club DJ. “Do your research 1st my love. During lockdown I gave more than 60 000 pads for Free, from my own pocket. What you see in stores gives me ‘cents’…What have you done lately,” says Lerato kganyago. She went on to say, “And also do you perhaps know how much it costs to make pads? With No support from a ‘white man’ or Government? You guys are always telling us to Give, but you can’t give out a slice of bread…” The club DJ says that people think what they do is a joke because sanitary pads don’t fit into the aesthetics of their pages.
