Church is a place where one can feel safe. However, for pastor and maskandi artist Scelo Ngcobo it wasn’t a safe place one day. The maskandi artist was attacked by armed robbers while he was in church in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.
The musician states that he was invited to preach at Maranata Apostolic Church in Tembisa on the 30th of October by Pastor Siyabonga Mabaso. “I stood by the door with fellow church members when a group of nine men attacked us. They threatened to shoot us. A church member was robbed and stripped naked,” says Scelo Ngcobo according to Daily Sun. He then states that the armed robbers tried to steal his car. “Fortunately, they couldn’t start the car and a commotion inside the church disturbed them,” says the maskandi artist.
Past Siyabonga Mabaso says the event happened at 11pm. “I don’t know the motive behind the attack. I’d have understood if it had been a maskandi festival, where there’s always a clash between fans. But I never expected this in church. I am still traumatised,” says Scelo Ngcobo. The robbers got away in a white minibus, according to the artist. A case was opened and the robbers were later on arrested.
