Black Coffee Becomes The Second SA DJ To Perform On NPR’s Tiny Desk Show. Internationally recognised icon Black Coffee is the latest artist to bring their live performance to the home edition of NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. The DJ and producer was celebrating his 45th birthday yesterday 11 March, and with his Tiny Desk debut, Black Coffee sure received the perfect birthday present.
Joined by a full backing band and vocalists, the set perfectly blended Black Coffee’s live production. The Tiny Desk concert series welcomed Black Coffee as the second ever DJ to take the show. Black Coffee was beaming with excitement to share the news with his fans. Taking to social media, Black Coffee posted a short video of his set captioned: “My long awaited @NPR#TinyDesk debut is here, for my birthday! What a present…being the second ever DJ to take the show. I’m so proud and humbled to represent my country! The set was filmed in the auditorium of the National School of Arts in Johannesburg with the assistance of additional students who helped out as part of an internship. Black Coffee opened the set with his 2012 track “You Rock My World” alongside the song’s feature artist Soulstar, he then followed up with “Flava,” which features vocals of Una Rams and Tellaman, and “Wish You Were Here,” featuring Msaki.
Black Coffee released his 12-track album titled Subconsciously in February 2021, making it his first proper full-length album since 2015’s Pieces of Me. Speaking on Subconsciously, Black Coffee said: “I hope that this album brings anyone who’s listening from anywhere in the world joy. That’s what the music is all about for me. I’ve been working on and evolving my sound for pretty much my entire life. Music is life to me and I want you to feel that with every beat and melody. Music should divide barriers and unite us under this one universal language—and that’s exactly what I wanted to do with ‘Subconsciously’. My artistic touch will always be defined by my music, but I want to break barriers and convey a global message, not just on dancefloors. This album goes way beyond.”
