The talented Limpopo-born musician, MasterKG, took to social media to share his reaction on the news. He wrote: “350 Million Views On YouTube Danko Danko,” retweeting a post by Africori fficial account written: “#Jerusalema extends its leads as the biggest music video by an African artist on YouTube as it leaps past 350 million views. Congrats once again @masterkgsa & @nomcebozikode #AfricanMusic #Milestone.”
Though the lyrics are sung in Zulu, “Jerusalema” quickly rose to global fame. On September 2020, Jerusalema became the most Shazamed song worldwide, with a reach of more than 600 million views on Tik Tok as part of a dance challenge, and more than 1 billion streams worldwide across all platforms. The track became Platinum in France (200,000 sales), Platinum in Belgium (40,000 sales) & 2x Platinum in Italy (140,000 sales).
The #JerusalemDanceChallenge then became (nearly) compulsory for every South African citizen in September 2020, after President Cyril Ramaphosa urged the nation to post videos of themselves participating in the dance challenge in celebration of Heritage Day. Global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo also used the song for a cute family video.
