DJ DUO The Billionaires Inspire Resilience Through Music

DJ duo The Billionaires, consisting of Ngcebo Mdima and Karabo Motlogelwa, are using their music to motivate people to persist despite rejection and stigmatisation. Members of the LGBTQI+ community, the duo has faced challenges since forming and starting their careers as DJs, but they have turned those experiences into a message of hope for others.

Their latest single, Nyamazane, aims to inspire people and provide a sense of belonging. Ngcebo Mdima, 40, who transitioned from being a publicist and artist manager to a DJ and producer, explained that the past two years have been difficult. He said, “Being a member of the LGBTQI+ community has not been smooth sailing, but we didn’t throw in the towel. We persevered through rejection, stigmatisation and marginalisation. Through our song we send a strong, powerful message to anyone facing the same challenges, offering hope and showing that over time, things do change.”

Nyamazane, released on 5 September, coincides with the festive season, and The Billionaires hope it becomes a hit during this period. Ngcebo described the track as “a celebration of those who refuse to allow adversities to deter them from pursuing their dreams. It speaks to the resilient spirit of people who choose not to give up regardless of the hurdles.” He added that the song is designed to energise dance floors while also carrying a motivational message.

The duo launched their music career in 2023 with the seven-track EP Son of The Soil, followed by several singles. Ngcebo highlighted that Nyamazane also celebrates 30 years of democracy and calls on entertainment managers and promoters to treat all DJs equally, reinforcing the message of inclusion and respect within the industry.
