Cape Town’s Youth Celebrate Youth Day With YoungstaCPT, Uncle Vinny & More
Cape Town’s Youth Celebrate Youth Day With YoungstaCPT, Uncle Vinny & More. The V&A Waterfront’s Battery Park was buzzing this past Youth Day as the Cape Town community came out in their numbers to celebrate with UCT Online High School and Grade Africa. Parents, grandparents, teens, tweens and little babies filled the ground as the event kicked off with an insightful chat led by Kieno Kammies, Head of Culture at UCT Online High School.
The panel, which was discussing The Importance of Education included UCT Online High School’s Deputy Principal, Sipho Mpisane, their Head of Student Wellbeing Daniella Randall, radio DJ Carl Wastie and hip-hop star YoungstaCPT, who all had their audience enthralled with anecdotes from their school years and encouraged learners to make and learn from their mistakes. Rob Paddock, ed-tech rockstar and founder of Valenture Institute, also made an impromptu appearance and spoke on UCT Online High School’s successes, challenges and impact for the future.
‘This event was such a beautiful reminder for me that the youth of today, much like that of ‘76, is smart, driven, critical and bold, and despite the many challenges they face, they are positioned in so many ways to be successful. Part of the road to that success, however, are the many opportunities to fail. Embrace those failures is what I advised them on the day. Don’t tolerate them, but embrace them. They will build the character you need once you get to the dream. That character is what will sustain you as you live out your purpose and change your life and the lives of those around you for the better.’, says Sipho Mpisane, UCT Online High School Deputy Principal.
DJ Lenneth Bowers and DJ Kyeezi kept the tunes coming, Uncle Vinny shook up the crowd like the hype man that he is and YoungstaCPT, Dee Koala, and KashCPT gave fantastic performances to an energetic crowd that danced and sang along throughout the afternoon. Guests got their make-up done by professional artists, got fresh fades from skilled Legends’ barbers and sneakerheads got a shoe clean, all for free. Skaters enjoyed the half-pipe, and the differently-abled enjoyed a Wheelchair Basketball tournament. It was an all-round great day of fun and activity.
