“I Was In A Narcissistically Abusive Relationship” – Berita On Her Marriage With Ex- Husband Nota Baloyi
“I was in a narcissistically abusive relationship -Berita on her marriage with ex- husband Nota Baloyi. Afro soul singer and songwriter Berita has spoken out candidly in her first interview since her divorce from music entrepreneur and estranged husband Nota Baloyi.
During the year 2022, social media witnessed Nota Baloyi publicly harassing Berita. In her interview with Dineo and Sol Phenduka at Kaya 959 , Berita expressed the things she endured in her marriage. The singer shared that 2022 had been a difficult period for her as her husband publicly harassed her on social media every chance he got. The singer added that she was not only publicly harassed, but also privately harassed and everyone around her was harassed by Nota Baloyi.
“It’s been a difficult year to be displaced and also abused publicly because that’s what it really is. I left in Jan and after I had left, he was harrasing me publicly, harrasing me privately, harrasing my family, harrasing everyone else around me”, said Berita.
She also shared how she left her marriage and how ready she was to leave and had to consult a therapist first before her exit. She discovered that she was in a narcissistically abusive relationship with Nota. When she found out that she was in an abusive relationship she made a decision to leave. “I have vivid memories of the day I left my marriage. I remember that was the first time I found out because I called a therapist on that day when I was leaving. That’s when I found out that I was in a narcissistically abusive relationship”, Berita shared.
The singer said that she had to leave the country for almost 6 months so that she can stay far away for her ex husband. Moreover, she said her husband did all that he did to her as he knew she was alone in Johannesburg and had no protection. “I had to even leave the country, I had to go back home to Zimbabwe to my grandmother for 6 months… My parents were scared for me… He knew what he was doing because he knows home is far, he knows that I’m alone in Johannesburg”, Berita shared.
She spoke out on the number of incidents that occurred before that led up to her final decision of leaving her marriage. She shared that it was in those moments that she realized that she was dealing with someone who has anger issues and has a lot that he is going through in his life. She also shared that when she got into the relationship, she saw the signs of abuse but realized she was in too deep. In August 2022, Berita said she realized that her love for her ex- husband had faded.
Despite everything she has gone through, Berita is still standing and working on new music. She shared that nothing will break her as there was Berita before her marriage and there will be Berita after her marriage. No one will take her music career away from her.
