Over the past couple of years we’ve witnessed quite a number of music artists in South Africa leaving their record labels due to different reasons, whilst upcoming artists dream of signing with these major labels. These artists celebrated being free from them.
The list below consists of artists who have parted ways with major record labels. The artists were vocal about their experiences with the labels involved and why they chose to leave. Some ended things on good terms, other matters ended up in court. A few of the artists became independent artists, whilst others joined other record labels. Despite all of this, these artists are still excelling in their craft, selling out shows and topping charts.

1. Busisiwe ‘Cici’ Twala
Cici who was with the record label, 999 Music left in 2017 after she had signed with the record label for a year. She shared that she left due to the troubles and abuse she experience at the hands of her partner, owner of 999 Music Arthur Mafokate. The was not only the reason for her to leave, but also because the record label was about to shut down.
2. Prince Kaybee
Prince Kaybee recently parted ways with his record label. The DJ had been with the record label for 8 years. In his recent interview on Podcast and Chill with MacG, he revealed that the record deal was not serving him anymore. The two parties came to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.
3. Simphiwe Dana
After 3 years of being signed with record label Universal Music, Afro soul songstress Simphiwe Dana parted ways with the record label. The singer was vocal on Social Media about the reasons of her exit. She shared that she was being exploited by the record label. The parties battled it out in court as the singer did not want to hand over everything she has worked hard for.
4. Amanda Black
Amanda left the record label, Ambitious entertainment in 2018. In a statement that was shared by the record label, it stated that she is leaving because both parties failed to come to terms with a few things.
5. Zahara
In 2019, songstress Zahara made an exit from TS Records Label after being signed for nearly 9 years. The singer shared that the reason why she left the label was due to being allegedly underpaid for her records and royalties.
