Watch! Winnie Khumalo speaks about her musical journey and new music. Singer and songwriter Winnie Khumalo opened up about her musical journey, where it all started and what she is currently working on. 

Winnie Khumalo is a pioneer and one of the most talented artists that have blessed their fans with timeless music in their prime. She has been in the music industry for more than 30 years and made immense contribution onto the music sphere. Her music still touches souls and her fans still love her music.

Speaking on her interview at Kaya 959, Winnie was vocal about the beginnings of her music career and about her new work. Taking people back, the singer shared that she debuted into the spotlight when she was only 15 years old. She said that when she started, her parents were supportive and encouraged her to further her music career but also stay in school. She also gave clarity to the people who claimed that she used to dodge school to go to her music sessions.

“My grandmother was very supportive and I was a respectful child. So I used to do things according to the house rules. I heard a lot of people saying I used to dodge at school, no I didn’t. I used to do music when it was time to go to the studio and went to school when I had to go to school”, Winnie Khumalo said.

The house music veteran was also privileged to have worked with the late music icon Brenda Fassie before her passing. She expressed that Brenda was her inspiration and she looked up to her. She also shared that she got an opportunity to work with her and was featured in some of her music videos.

“Well I started with Brenda Fassie. I think it was a around the time she was about to pass. She was my mentor, when growing up, I used to look up to her and used to imitate Brenda Fassie. I was featured on her music videos including the song Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu. It was great life, everything was easy back then”, Winnie Khumalo shared.

Additionally, Winnie also spoke about her new single titled Imithwalo released in April 2023. Her new track is available on all streaming platforms. She shared that the song is about parents that go through a lot with their children. She further added that this song is a way of encouraging parents out there to stand up for themselves and speak out about the troubles they are facing.

“You can get Imithwalo on all digital platforms. Imithwalo is all about the parents. We go through a lot. We compromise, sacrifice for our daughters and sons but at the end of the day they do not appreciate us. A lot of parents are going through things and they are quite. What I am saying with this song is can you please have the courage to speak out”, said Winnie Khumalo.
