Dlala Thukzin Named Apple Music’s Isgubhu Cover Star, Cementing His Place in African Dance Music

Apple Music has officially crowned South African DJ and producer Dlala Thukzin as the latest cover star of its premier dance music playlist, Isgubhu — a powerful nod to his influence in shaping the continent’s electronic soundscape.
A Humble Nod to Global Recognition
The moment is a proud milestone for the Durban-born hitmaker. “Big love to Apple Music for putting me on the cover of Isgubhu this month, it’s truly an honour,” said Thukzin. “I enjoy working with people I trust, and creating music that feels good and means something.”
The recognition shines a spotlight not only on his career but also on the vibrant Gqom and Afro-Tech genres that have surged out of South Africa and into global playlists.
Thukzin’s Musical Origins and Rise to Fame
Born Thuthuka Wandile Zindlovu, Thukzin’s journey into music began in the township of Lamontville, Durban. Raised by his grandmother, he was first introduced to the world of sound through his uncle, assisting at local gigs — an early foundation that would later shape his sound.
His breakout came in 2016 with the production of Babes Wodumo’s smash hit “Umngan’wami”, a defining track in the global Gqom wave. Since then, Dlala Thukzin has remained at the forefront of innovation in South African dance music, earning acclaim for his signature fusion of Gqom, Afro-Tech, and House.
A Discography That Reflects Evolution
Thukzin’s catalogue showcases his artistic growth and commitment to quality. The Permanent Music series and Finally Famous albums have built a loyal fanbase, while his hit single “iPlan” featuring Zaba and Sykes achieved Double Platinum status in 2023 — a career-defining moment.
New Release: 031 Studio Camp Vol. 2
Keeping the momentum strong, Thukzin recently dropped 031 Studio Camp Vol. 2, an eight-track EP that expands on his Durban-based annual creative camp. The project features collaborations with standout artists like Zeh McGeba, Nkosazana Daughter, and Zee Nxumalo, blending Afro-Tech and House in a fresh and fearless way.
“It’s a project that shows where we are with our sound right now,” said Thukzin. “It’s about working with the people who I trust and creating music that feels good and real.”
Curating the Isgubhu Vibe
To mark his cover feature on Isgubhu, Thukzin curated a special selection of tracks that reflect his musical direction and spotlight rising talent. His picks include:
- “Uzizwa Kanjan” by Jazzworx, MaWhoo & Thukuthela
- “Isaka (6am)” by Ciza & Jazzworx
- “Cry” by Beekay Monalayzzar
“Afro-Tech is running deep,” Thukzin noted, applauding the next wave of producers and artists like Ciza and Beekay who are pushing the genre forward.
