Lebza TheVillain Joins Kunye Records as New A&R Lead, Signaling Bold Step in Afro House Evolution

South African DJ and producer Lebza TheVillain has officially joined Kunye Records as the new A&R (Artists and Repertoire) lead, ushering in a transformative moment in both his career and the Afro House landscape. The announcement was made through a video shared on his social media, accompanied by an impassioned caption:
“Thrilled to be diving into A&R and music content for @kunyerecords
Africa to the world
Shout out @shimza.dj for trust me
Let’s tell the story of Afro House music.”
This appointment sees Lebza stepping into a powerful creative role at one of the continent’s most forward-thinking record labels, founded by acclaimed DJ and producer Shimza. Kunye Records, which means “together” in Xhosa, has been instrumental in globalizing the Afro House genre since its inception in 2020, and Lebza’s arrival adds a new layer of artistic depth to the label’s growing influence.
Lebza TheVillain, born Lebogang Thubakgale in Ivory Park, Midrand, has built a reputation as one of the country’s most consistent and soulful musical talents. A Boston Media House graduate in Marketing, he began crafting beats at the age of 13, eventually creating a distinctive sound that blends Afro House with jazz, hip-hop, and Amapiano. His versatility and ear for melody have helped him stand out in a competitive industry.
His catalogue includes acclaimed releases such as Gift of House, Nanini, Netha, and Voiceless, as well as fan favourites like Possible, Wena, and Sosha. Beyond the studio, he has made his mark as a resident DJ on YFM’s YTKO and Krunch Time slots, drawing influence from legends like DJ Fresh, Euphonik, and DJ Kent. His passion for vinyl and crate-digging culture reflects a deeper appreciation for the roots of house music.
Now, in his new role at Kunye Records, Lebza will play a critical part in discovering and nurturing talent while also curating the label’s musical direction. His understanding of the South African soundscape, coupled with his artist-first mindset, positions him as a bridge between local talent and global platforms.
Kunye has become known for its innovative output—hosting unforgettable events in Cape Town, Nairobi, London, and Paris, while working with genre leaders like Louie Vega, Mele, Rodriguez Jr., and developing stars such as Sun-El Musician, Thakzin, and Blanka Mazimela. It’s a label where Afro-tech meets storytelling, and where tradition meets innovation.
Lebza’s move into A&R is not just a career progression—it’s a cultural statement. His vision to “tell the story of Afro House music” aligns seamlessly with Kunye’s mission to amplify African voices to the world. It signals an exciting era where artists and curators are working hand-in-hand to redefine what African electronic music can become on the world stage.
As he embarks on this new journey, all eyes are on Lebza TheVillain—now not only as a producer and DJ, but as a visionary helping shape the next wave of Afro House artistry.
