Queen Sinda Pays Tribute to Matriarchs with Soulful Debut Single “Uthando Nguwe” This Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day, South African music lovers are celebrating not just the women in their lives, but also the arrival of a powerful new voice. Emerging vocalist and songwriter Queen Sinda, born Lusinda Rolisisu, is making a heartfelt impact with her debut single “Uthando Nguwe” — a moving ode to the grandmothers, mothers, and maternal figures whose love continues to shape generations.
Released under the Beyond Busking Project, a creative initiative from the Cape Town Arts Festival in partnership with the Ariva Arts Foundation, “Uthando Nguwe” translates to “Love Is You” and serves as a poignant tribute to Sinda’s late grandmother, who passed away on Mother’s Day in 2005.
“On that day, my grandmother left this earthly sphere,” Sinda shared. “But her spirit remains. Her wisdom, love, and gentle hands continue to guide me. I wrote ‘Uthando Nguwe’ because she lives on through a legacy of love – and I know so many others were raised by their grandparents too. This song is for them.”
A Voice of Healing and Legacy
For Sinda, music has long been more than just a craft — it’s been a sanctuary and a bridge to her identity. Speaking to Independent Media Lifestyle, she described how singing brought her “healing, comfort, and joy,” a discovery she made in her youth through the encouragement of those around her.
That support helped her carve a path that would lead to a versatile career, one that spans jazz, Afro-soul, gospel, and musical theatre. Her dynamic talent has seen her shine as a soloist with respected ensembles like the Western Cape Police Choir and Petro SA Choir, cementing her place as a rising star in South Africa’s music scene.
Musical Roots and Influences
Sinda’s sound is inspired by a blend of powerful South African voices. She cites Simphiwe Dana, Sibongile Khumalo, the late Yallunder, and the legendary Miriam Makeba as foundational influences in her artistic journey.
“They’ve helped me find my voice,” she noted, “and taught me how to use it to speak truth, even when it’s wrapped in melody.”
The Birth of “Uthando Nguwe”
With the support of the Beyond Busking Project, Sinda was finally able to bring a long-held dream to life — writing a song for her grandmother. The track features a blend of heartfelt vocals and instrumentation by talented collaborators including Thami Baba, Jonny Blundell, and Francesca Biancoli, backed by a skilled rhythm section.
“I’m so grateful to be part of the Beyond Busking program,” Sinda said. “It helped me fulfil my dream of writing my granny a song I’ve always wanted to.”
Yusuf Ganief, CEO of the Cape Town Arts Festival, praised the song’s impact.
“‘Uthando Nguwe’ is more than a song — it’s a tribute to all the unseen matriarchs whose love shaped our lives. Sinda brings truth, vulnerability, and power to her music.”
