Edsoul: South Africa’s Deep-Soul House Visionary Keeping the Culture Alive

In South Africa’s vibrant house music scene, DJ and producer Edsoul stands out as a soulful force blending tribal rhythms, techno, ambient textures, and futuristic house sounds into a seamless, emotive experience. His approach to music goes beyond beats—it’s a spiritual connection that resonates deeply with his audience.
Sitting comfortably at the recent Bread4Soul event, Edsoul shared his thoughts on why gatherings like these are vital. “It’s events like these that keep the culture alive,” he said. “This is one of those events I needed.” The atmosphere was charged with a spiritual energy, affirming his belief that house music transcends any individual—it’s a collective, soulful movement.
One of the highlights of Edsoul’s journey came recently when he hosted Grammy-winning DJ Louie Vega. The moment was profoundly emotional for him. “It was a dream come true,” he revealed. “He owes us nothing, but he came. That moment? I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life.” Such experiences underscore the bridging of global and local house music cultures, a thread Edsoul is passionate about nurturing.
South Africa’s house music scene is rich and diverse, with numerous sub-genres flourishing simultaneously. Edsoul credits its vitality to the ongoing connection between music and audience. “As long as there’s an audience that’s connecting with the music, it works,” he explained. “People will forever enjoy it as long as it speaks to them.”
Edsoul’s latest single, Can Do Better, is a testament to the magic of spontaneous collaboration. Originally recorded with vocalist Wanda Baloyi, it unexpectedly evolved when international artist Harrison Crump added his vocals. “To work with someone I looked up to in the industry was amazing,” Edsoul shared, highlighting how inspiration often comes in unplanned ways.
Edsoul’s passion for music started early. Collecting vinyl and DJing from the age of 14 or 15, he never imagined the journey ahead. “I never thought I’d be where I am today,” he confessed. “At that age, I was spinning records of people I now call friends. It’s surreal. Passion drives me.”
Before embarking on his solo career, Edsoul was one half of The Rhythm Sessions alongside Fang DaRhythm. “We had a synergy that you can’t explain,” he reminisced. “We’d go weeks without speaking, but the minute we were behind the decks, it was magic.” Their decade-long partnership profoundly shaped his music and event curation philosophy.
While Edsoul prefers to keep plans fluid, he teases exciting projects ahead. Currently in the studio with undisclosed artists, he’s also preparing a remix package for Change The World, his collaboration with NutownSoul. “There’s even an international remix coming,” he revealed, promising fresh sounds to look forward to.
Addressing speculation about NutownSoul’s break from the scene, Edsoul clarified: “He didn’t quit—just took a break. We’ve been working quietly in the background. You’ll hear what we’ve been cooking soon.”
As the conversation drew to a close, Edsoul shared a heartfelt message for the house music community: “Shout out to everyone pushing the house music scene forward. Music is not a competition. The more we act as a community, the better.”
Whether curating iconic events like The Soulaced Sessions, collaborating with legends, or crafting genre-defining tracks, Edsoul embodies the heart and soul of South African house music. With a perfect blend of humility, ambition, and spiritual connection, he continues to lead a movement that moves not just feet, but hearts and minds alike.
