Reality TV Star-Turned-Rising DJ Kay B Set to Shake Up the Music Scene

Karabo Mphirime, better known as Kay B, is making waves as she transitions from reality TV fame to the pulsating world of DJing. The former Big Brother Mzansi contestant from Bloemfontein, Free State, is ready to leave behind the reality show spotlight and step fully into the music scene—with style, rhythm, and big dreams.
At just 23 years old, Kay B insists that becoming a DJ isn’t a career pivot but a passion she’s always wanted to share. “It’s not really a shift, but something I’ve always wanted to showcase while I was in the Big Brother house. Unfortunately, my time there was short, so people didn’t get to see the musical side of me,” she told Daily Sun.
Music runs in her veins, inspired by prominent artists such as DJ Kent, Simi, Prince KB, and Caiiro. Kay B gravitates towards Afro-house, Afro-tech, and 3-step—a sound she describes as her natural vibe. “That sound lives in me. I just want people to feel that in my sets,” she explains.
But Kay B’s journey to the DJ decks has not been without its hurdles. “I thought you just step up, spin the decks, and vibe. But there’s real skill involved. It’s about technique, understanding your sound, and finding your own unique style. It’s more than just playing songs, it’s storytelling through music.”
Fans can expect an authentic and immersive experience from her sets. She describes her style as “dreamlike and flowy,” designed to take listeners on a journey—a musical escape where they can visualise their highest selves. Notably, Kay B sees herself filling a gap: “I haven’t seen many young women my age pushing Afro-house or Afro-tech, so I want to bring something fresh and real.”
As Kay B rises from reality TV star to music scene contender, her fresh energy and dedication are poised to shake up South Africa’s vibrant Afro-house landscape. Keep an eye on this young talent as she spins her story, one beat at a time.
