Siya Ntuli’s New EP “Imbiza” Fuses Afro-Pop and Maskandi with Tradition and Soul

Siya Ntuli, the talented Afro-pop and maskandi fusion artist, recently opened up to Daily Sun about the inspiration behind his latest EP, Imbiza. The project is a vibrant blend of tradition, soul, and contemporary sounds that reflects Siya’s deep connection to his musical roots while embracing modern vibes.

The 31-year-old singer, who hails from Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal, credits his upbringing for shaping his unique sound. “I grew up listening to traditional music, including maskandi, iscathamiya, and mbhaqanga a lot. So, I can say this is what makes me stay at home and not leave my roots by combining it with the sound that is played now,” Siya explained.

Imbiza, which means traditional medicine in isiZulu, is more than just a title for Siya — it symbolizes the essence of the project. “Just like the ingredients blended together in traditional medicine, this EP mixes the sounds that raised me with the energy that drives me now,” he said.

Creating the EP was a labor of love, especially given the challenge of fusing genres seamlessly. Siya emphasized his desire for authenticity and emotional resonance. “Combining these genres took a lot of time because I had to make sure it was accepted in the right way and found the right place in people’s hearts,” he revealed.

The EP boasts an impressive lineup of collaborators, blending the talents of maskandi legends and rising stars alongside notable Afro-pop artists. Among those featured are Shwi Mantombazane, Imfezi Emnyama, Gatsheni, Mzukulu, Mtubatuba Thulisa Brothers, Donald, Xowla, Diary Mbongwa, and Trymore.

Siya believes Imbiza carries powerful messages of love, healing, and hope. “I hope people will take a lot from this EP. The way we made these songs builds homes, a bit of love as well, and some songs are about healing,” he shared.

Reflecting on the final sound, Siya expressed excitement about the blend of styles. “Hearing it all come together, the maskandi soul, the Afro-pop bounce, and modern beats gives me chills,” he said.

With Imbiza, Siya Ntuli continues to push boundaries while honoring the musical traditions that have shaped him, delivering a fresh sound that resonates with both old and new generations of music lovers.
