Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival Marks 20 Years with Powerful World Premiere

The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) is poised to mark its 20th anniversary with a rich and thought-provoking programme running from 4 to 13 July at the US Konservatorium in Stellenbosch. Celebrated for its blend of classical excellence and contemporary relevance, this year’s festival promises to be a landmark edition with a mix of concerts, masterclasses, and standout performances.

One of the most anticipated moments of the 2025 edition is the world premiere of “RESONANCE”, a bold and moving new composition by Boston-based jazz pianist and composer Kevin Harris, scheduled for 8 July. Known for his emotive musical storytelling, Harris brings a fresh and contemporary voice to this year’s festival with a work that bridges musical sophistication and social consciousness.

“RESONANCE” is a symphonic reflection inspired by the life and legacy of Steve Biko, the anti-Apartheid activist and central figure in South Africa’s Black Consciousness movement. Drawing on Biko’s writings and ideological influence, Harris’s composition explores themes of justice, identity, and the unseen struggles of marginalized communities.

The piece challenges audiences to engage with uncomfortable truths. Harris describes it as a call to “reflect on those who suffer in the shadows while also upsetting those who comfortably benefit from the status quo.” His intention is not only to honour Biko’s legacy, but to spark introspection and dialogue through music.

Beyond the premiere, SICMF’s 10-day programme will feature performances from internationally renowned chamber musicians, promising a blend of classical masterworks and contemporary compositions. Masterclasses, educational outreach, and artist talks will offer young musicians and audiences a chance to deepen their connection to the art form.

As it celebrates two decades of musical excellence, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival continues to evolve as a platform for both artistry and meaningful cultural conversation. With “RESONANCE” set to take centre stage, this year’s festival is not just a celebration of music, but of reflection, transformation, and the enduring power of art to challenge and inspire.

Tickets and full programme details are available on the festival’s official website.
