Kalden Berg Drops Wacky, Heartfelt Music Video for “Mindy”

South African singer-songwriter Kalden Berg has released the official music video for his latest single, “Mindy”, a sharp and witty dive into the painful hilarity of one-sided love. Drenched in pop-rock energy and spiked with surreal visual humor, the video captures the frustration and absurdity of romantic cycles where nothing ever really changes.

Inspired by an unexpected source — a scruffy dog that wouldn’t return his affection — “Mindy” grew into something deeper: a metaphor for toxic relationship loops. Kalden describes it as an emotional Groundhog Day, the kind many people find themselves stuck in, no matter how much effort they put in or how many times they try to leave.

“I wrote this song after realizing the hilarity behind my relationship with a dog being so similar to the stories I’ve heard from so many of my friends,” Kalden shares. “It’s about those relationships where no matter what you do, you end up right back where you started.”

The track’s creation was as intimate as its story. Kalden co-wrote “Mindy” alongside his livestream community and composed it using a weathered, decade-old songbook. Almost every instrument heard on the track was performed by Kalden himself, with the exception of the bass, played by frequent collaborator Cinnamon Buns, and a soaring guitar solo courtesy of Louie Lixx. Mixing was handled by John Wisher, and the final master was crafted by Ewald van Rensburg.

Programmed drums, chosen intentionally, add to the hypnotic, robotic feel of the track — echoing the loop of toxic affection the song explores.

The music video, shot in a delightfully DIY style, takes the theme of repetition and gives it a creative twist. Each scene resets with a slight variation, as Kalden navigates bizarre and comically absurd scenarios that escalate with each reboot. The visuals amplify the feeling of emotional déjà vu and perfectly mirror the track’s playful-yet-painful tone.

Kalden Berg’s artistic journey reflects a mix of grit, heart, and experimentation. From fronting his high school band Basement8 and reaching the semi-finals on South Africa’s Got Talent in 2016, to building a loyal online fanbase through livestreams, he’s crafted a career rooted in authenticity and connection.

Born in Cape Town, raised in Mbombela, and currently based in Johannesburg, Kalden fuses his diverse influences into a sound that’s distinctively his. “For me, it’s not just about building a fanbase,” he says. “It’s about building a community and sharing in the beauty of music creation.”

With “Mindy”, Kalden Berg solidifies his position as one of South Africa’s most unique and emotionally resonant artists — a storyteller who pairs honesty with eccentricity and brings music to life in the most unexpected ways.
