Mikhaela Faye Returns with Defiant New EP I’m Bored – A Genre-Blending Burst of Emotion and Escapism

Cape Town-based singer-songwriter Mikhaela Faye is back in the spotlight with the release of her much-anticipated second EP, I’m Bored — a five-track sonic rollercoaster that leans into vulnerability, satire, and pop-punk rebellion. It’s a bold pivot from her earlier work, and it couldn’t be more timely.
“I’ve made a lot of very serious, ‘try-hard’ music in my life,” Mikhaela reflects. “The biggest disservice I can do to myself is to take it all too seriously. This EP was about shaking that off, embracing the naughties pop-punk teenage Mikhaela, and just having fun.”
And that fun? It’s loud, cathartic, and unapologetically real.
Produced in collaboration with longtime creative partner Josh Berry, I’m Bored is a raw exploration of modern emotional fatigue — what Mikhaela dubs “hyperactive escapism.” The EP explores everything from toxic love to the suffocating pace of daily life, channeled through cheeky lyrics, synth-laced beats, and rebellious hooks that hit as hard as they heal.
Each track tells a distinct emotional story:
- “Smothered By U” confronts emotional claustrophobia with simmering tension and layered vocals.
- “Lost You For the Last Time” dips into moody introspection, drenched in the ache of heartbreak.
- “Uncool” combines biting wit with self-reflective honesty, poking fun at the need to fit in.
- “Gaslighter”, the standout lead single, is a defiant anthem for anyone walking away from manipulation, wrapped in candy-coated alt-pop grit.
- The title track “I’m Bored” encapsulates the EP’s central theme: feeling numb and overstimulated in a world that’s moving too fast to process.
“There’s so much stimulation — social media, headlines, constant opinions — and it becomes too much,” Mikhaela says. “Boredom becomes our defense mechanism. It’s not laziness, it’s emotional self-preservation.”
Sonically, the EP is a melting pot of influences. From indie pop and electro to hints of early-2000s rock, I’m Bored is a fearless mash-up of everything that inspires Mikhaela — delivered with flair, heart, and unexpected emotional punch. It’s a creative leap that mirrors her personal journey: embracing chaos, letting go of control, and rediscovering the joy in music.
“I get bored very easily,” she laughs. “I want to play with different characters and genres — it’s like a musical smoothie. If you drank the same smoothie every day, you’d stop enjoying it. Music should surprise you. It should make you feel.”
Mikhaela Faye’s I’m Bored is available now on all major streaming platforms. For fans of fearless storytelling, emotional complexity, and genre-hopping soundscapes, this is an EP worth hitting repeat on.
