Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival Marks 20th Anniversary With Powerful Program Of Classics, Jazz, And Innovation

This year, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) celebrates its milestone 20th anniversary with an exceptional program that blends classical masterpieces, innovative new compositions, and inspiring performances by rising stars and celebrated musicians. Taking place from 4 to 13 July 2025 at the prestigious Endler Hall, the festival promises a captivating journey through sound, heritage, and imagination, culminating in a grand finale concert on Sunday, 13 July, at 16:30.
The celebrations begin with a special pre-concert on Thursday, 3 July, featuring the SICMF Alumni Symphony Orchestra, a one-night reunion of past participants who have shaped the festival’s legacy since its inception. Under the baton of Jacobus de Jager, one of South Africa’s brightest young conductors, the orchestra will perform Mahler’s towering Fifth Symphony, Gershwin’s jazz-infused Concerto in F, and a new work by South African composer Matthijs van Dijk. This powerful opening performance will set the tone for a week of musical excellence and collaboration.
Starting Friday, 4 July, the faculty concerts will take audiences on an unforgettable journey. One of the highlights is Max Richter’s reimagined version of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, featuring renowned violinist Daniel Rowland. This concert will conclude with Ravel’s Bolero, accompanied by an elegant performance by dancers from the Figure of 8 Dance Theatre, combining movement and music in a dazzling showcase of artistic fusion.
Festivalgoers can look forward to a carefully curated selection of classical gems, including works by Beethoven, Shostakovich, Strauss, Brahms, and Saint-Saëns. This year’s featured composer, acclaimed Boston-based jazz pianist Kevin Harris, will debut a powerful new composition on Tuesday, 8 July. Titled “Light and Resonance – A Contemporary Symphonic Reflection Through the Courageous Lens of Steve Biko,” the piece draws from the words of the iconic anti-apartheid activist to explore themes of justice, transformation, and hope.
In keeping with the festival’s commitment to education, the SICMF will host over 300 student participants, who will engage in daily masterclasses, open rehearsals, and student concerts at 13:00 and 17:00. These performances offer the public a glimpse into the next generation of classical musicians, performing side-by-side with their esteemed mentors.
Adding to the celebratory spirit, a special artwork by celebrated South African pointillist Gavin Rain will be revealed during the festival. This three-dimensional portrait of the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, a beloved patron of the SICMF, will be assembled in public outside the Konservatorium building, allowing festivalgoers to witness its creation as part of the anniversary festivities.
Under the visionary leadership of artistic director Nina Schumann, the 2025 Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival promises to be more than a concert series—it’s a celebration of legacy, community, and the boundless power of music to connect and inspire.
Join the SICMF in honouring 20 years of musical excellence, cultural richness, and creative exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned concertgoer or a curious newcomer, this year’s program offers something truly unforgettable for everyone.
