Matthew Charles Releases ‘Home By Now’

South African singer-songwriter Matthew Charles has released his latest single, Home By Now, the third track from his upcoming debut EP, What’s On Your Mind? Known for his emotional writing and vulnerable storytelling, Matthew delivers a heartfelt reflection on the complexities of relationships.
The song’s chorus, “If love was easy, we’d be home by now,” captures the core metaphor. Home By Now explores the effort, growth, and choices required to sustain love, using the idea of living together as a symbol for the state of a relationship.
Originally written as a heartbreak ballad, the track evolved into a hopeful perspective on love with co-writers Helena Bowie and Sophia Joelle. Matthew shared that the song went through four versions, with the chorus structure being adjusted at the last minute to better convey the story.
Production of Home By Now is intentionally raw and intimate, drawing on stripped-down country-pop influences. Co-produced by Helena Bowie and Matthew May, the arrangement keeps Matthew’s vocals and lyrics at the forefront. “I didn’t want a big-sounding record because I thought it would take away from the story,” Matthew explained. The minimalist approach allows the emotional texture to resonate clearly with listeners.
Matthew Charles continues to build a signature sound rooted in honesty, melody, and emotion. He describes Home By Now as his favourite record so far, highlighting the personal connection and universal themes that make it relatable for fans.
