Biki Baya Debuts with “On My Way (Back Home)” and Vibrant Music Video

Rising music collective Biki Baya have released their much-anticipated debut single, “On My Way (Back Home),” now available on all digital platforms. Accompanied by a striking music video, the track blends humor, heart, and humanity, introducing the group’s unique sound and storytelling.

Frontman Josua Vroegop explained that the song was inspired by a barroom tale in a small Western Cape town where wine flows as freely as conversation. After one man’s comical defeat at the hands of a bottle of pinotage, he broke into song: “On my way, on my way, on my way back home!” What started as a drunken chant became a shared anthem, uniting strangers in laughter and reflection.

“The song is a wink, a smile, and a tear,” said Vroegop. “It reminds us that everyone copes with life’s struggles in different ways. While it touches on drinking, it’s not about glorifying it. At its core, it’s about the shared human experience of struggle and finding connection, even in unlikely places.”

The music video brings this vision to life with bold imagery and Biki Baya’s signature style, full of rhythm, joy, and character. It captures the essence of the collective’s energy, turning a simple story into a celebration of resilience and community. The release coincides with Heritage Month in South Africa, giving added depth to Vroegop’s reflections on his own background. His mother hails from Bela Bela and his father from Ladismith in the Western Cape. Although his parents moved to the Netherlands planning to stay only two years, their family life extended there, and Josua was born.

“I grew up between the Netherlands and South Africa. Visiting my family in Bela Bela and Ladismith left such a strong impression on me that I eventually wrote a song about it called ‘Bela Bela,’” he shared.

The experience of living between two cultures shaped his perspective. “At times, it was confusing. In the Netherlands, I often felt like a foreigner, and in South Africa, I felt the same. Over time, I learned that this ‘in-between’ space is a country of its own. My song reflects that experience: it speaks of going home while being stuck at the pub. It’s like a mirror, just don’t ask me which country represents which – I don’t even know the answer to that.”

This duality of identity and belonging flows into Biki Baya’s music, making it both personal and universally relatable.

Biki Baya is a collective rooted in African rhythms and storytelling. Their sound blends the joyful, major-chord-driven music of Southern Africa with the haunting desert blues of the North. Elements of Highlife, Afrobeat, and Desert Blues converge into a lively, danceable mix.

Their performances are designed as journeys, filled with infectious vocal lines, layered grooves, and high energy. The goal is not only to entertain but also to uplift and unite audiences through music.

With “On My Way (Back Home),” Biki Baya introduces themselves as more than just musicians. They emerge as storytellers weaving humor, culture, and emotion into a sound that is proudly African yet resonates across borders.

The single and music video are available now on all major streaming platforms, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter for the collective.
