Shalate Sekhabi Shifts Focus to Music with Debut Album Xa Ungekho

After her exit from House of Zwide in July, Shalate Sekhabi is turning her attention to her music career. The 25-year-old artist, who gained widespread recognition through the popular TV show, is set to release her debut album, Xa Ungekho, marking a new chapter in her artistic journey.

Sekhabi spoke to Sowetan about navigating this transition and balancing her dual passions. She explained that while acting provided a platform for her music, her goal is to bridge both worlds. “I’m trying to find the balance between both worlds. Though I started as a musician, House of Zwide gave me a huge platform and an opportunity to expand my music audience, which is what I’m trying to do now,” she said. She emphasized that being an artist encompasses both music and acting, allowing one to flourish when the other slows down.

When asked about the differences between recording music and acting, Sekhabi said music offers more personal freedom. “Music is on my own terms – it’s my storytelling and my expression. Being on set is about bringing someone else’s vision, through a script, to life. Both are rewarding and fun, so I’ll always love and do both.”

Sekhabi describes her sound as raw and emotional, rooted in R&B. She focuses on real experiences and feelings, aiming to create a connection with listeners. “I want the listener to feel heard. Sometimes you go through things and don’t know you’re not alone in them – my music is my way of expressing my innermost feelings and I hope listeners can use it as an outlet as well,” she said.

Her acting experience also informs her music. Sekhabi explained that her artistic talents influence one another. “Sometimes my acting influences my music and sometimes my music influences my acting. It all works together to create something authentic.”

Xa Ungekho represents a deeply personal journey. Sekhabi described the album as cathartic, helping her release built-up emotions and find healing. She hopes listeners experience the same sense of release through her music.

When asked about dream collaborators, Sekhabi cited Kehlani and Filah lah lah. She stressed that her career inspiration comes from her desire for longevity rather than a single person, grounding herself in authenticity and faith.

Looking ahead, Sekhabi aims for more albums, tours, and international exposure. She wants to reach greater heights and cement her place in the music industry. Xa Ungekho signals the start of a new era for Sekhabi, one where her music takes center stage while maintaining her identity as a multi-talented artist.
