Standard Bank Joy of Jazz 2025 Delivers Unforgettable Music and Vibes

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz returned to the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg this past weekend, bringing three days of exceptional music, energy, and celebration. Music lovers filled the venue, moving between four stages and enjoying a lineup that offered something for every jazz fan. Choosing between simultaneous performances was the festival’s biggest challenge.

Beyond the music, the festival’s hospitality stood out. Attendees enjoyed extras like the Coca-Cola photo booth, where you could have your name or favourite phrase printed on a can. The festival atmosphere was electric, with smiles, photos, and shared moments creating a sense of community. Joy of Jazz was more than a music festival; it was a cultural celebration.

Amanda Black delivered one of the weekend’s standout performances. Her set combined uplifting energy with emotional depth, demonstrating music’s power to connect people. Classics like “Kahle” created waves of joy, and her closing performance of “Amazulu” had the audience on their feet, singing along in unison. The venue was filled with gratitude, love, and even tears of happiness.

US artist Meshell Ndegeocello brought her spoken word and neo-soul to life on the Conga Stage Friday evening. The performance captivated the audience from the first note. The band’s rich instrumentals, combined with a spellbinding guitar performance, created an immersive experience. Fans left inspired, discovering new sounds and absorbing every moment of the hour-long set. It became one of the festival’s defining performances.

The festival also celebrated its audience. Advocate Dali Mpofu, attending for his birthday, highlighted standout acts including Nduduzo Makhathini, the Ababhemu Quartet, Siya Makuzeni, and Nomfundo Xaluva. He noted that Joy of Jazz has grown into a cultural institution in South Africa. “It’s now part of South African culture,” he said.

Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has been running since 1997, growing from a small gathering to a major festival attracting over 36,000 people annually. It provides a platform for international stars and emerging local talent, shaping South Africa’s musical landscape.

This year’s edition reinforced the festival’s importance. From homegrown stars to global acts, every performance celebrated the evolution of jazz in South Africa. By Sunday night, it was clear that Joy of Jazz remains a must-experience event, a festival that unites people through music and leaves a lasting impression on all who attend.
