Tyla Secures Second MTV VMA with Best Afrobeats Win

South African export singer Tyla added a second MTV Video Music Award to her collection at the 2025 ceremony, taking home the Best Afrobeats trophy for her hit “Push 2 Start”. She beat out global heavyweights including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, Asake, Shenseea, Skillibeng, and Rema.
At the ceremony held on Sunday at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, Tyla expressed her excitement. “I’m very excited, the competition was very tough. Shout-out to all the nominees, shout-out to Africa and my team. It’s just a blessing to be here winning another award,” she said. She also teased her next album, confirming it will be released soon. “It’s coming and it’s coming in hot. Like for real, just keep an eye out,” she added.
Tyla stood out on the red carpet, wearing a vintage beige Chanel mini-dress from the Spring Collection, originally modeled by Claudia Schiffer in 1993. She accessorised with gold medallion chains around her neck, wrist, and waist, all from Pandora.
The 22-year-old singer’s win highlighted her rising influence in the global music scene. Her performance and fashion choice reinforced her reputation as a trendsetter and musical force.
Lady Gaga was the biggest winner of the night, securing four awards including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Bruno Mars for “Die With a Smile”. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each won three awards. Doechii took home two trophies for Best Hip Hop and Best Choreography for her hit “Anxiety”.
Special honours went to Mariah Carey (Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award), Busta Rhymes (Rock the Bells Visionary Award), and Ricky Martin (Latin Icon Award). Performances included Tate McRae, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, and DJs like DJ Snake.
The full list of winners featured global stars across multiple genres. Ariana Grande won Video of the Year for “Brighter Days Ahead” and Best Pop. Sabrina Carpenter took Best Pop Artist, Best Visual Effects, and Best Album for “Short n’ Sweet”. Coldplay, Shakira, BLACKPINK, and Lisa featuring Doja Cat and Raye also claimed awards. Mariah Carey won Best R&B for “Type Dangerous”, and Alex Warren was named Best New Artist.
Tyla’s Best Afrobeats win cements her place among Africa’s top international acts and highlights her continued rise on the global stage. Her fans can expect more music from the South African star as she prepares for her next album.
