Culoe De Song: A Name That Shaped a Musical Destiny

Record producer and DJ Culolethu Zulu, known globally as Culoe De Song, has a name that reflects his life’s purpose. Born in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, Culolethu means “our song,” a name chosen by his parents and grandparents who recognised his artistic potential from birth.
“When I was born, my mkhulu took me and placed me on his keyboard and said, ‘Here is our song that we’ve been waiting for, and we will name him Culolethu,’” he recalled. He explained that his career has always aligned with the meaning of his name. “I followed the destiny of the name and I’m still learning and growing it,” he said.
Culoe De Song is best known for his Afro-house sound, which he discovered through dance compilations. “Back then, it was of a recreational side. I was one of those guys, when other kids were playing outside, I was stuck in the library, being on the internet and trying to understand some things. Curiosity got the better of me, understanding what ocean music means,” he explained.
The DJ also spoke about the universal and unifying power of music. “When you come together in one place and are all moving through this universal language, you realise that there is an understanding outside the performance linguistic,” he said.
Culoe De Song has consistently used his platform to explore and share Afro-house music, proving that his name was not just a gift, but a guide to a career rooted in rhythm, connection, and musical storytelling.
