Maskandi Legend Ihashi Elimhlophe Prepares to Release New Album “Ma-Afrika” After 46 Years in Music

Legendary maskandi singer Bheki “Ihashi Elimhlophe” Ngcobo has spent 46 years in the music industry and shows no signs of slowing down. At 65, the Ama Waza Waza hitmaker remains energetic on stage, dancing and leaping across performances with the agility of a white horse, leaving audiences amazed at his vitality.
Ihashi Elimhlophe is gearing up to release a new album, Ma-Afrika, proving he has no plans to retire anytime soon. He told Daily Sun that his continued relevance and evolution in music come from a genuine love for the craft. “I love my music career, and that’s why it is easier for me to evolve. I didn’t follow the music career for money, but I followed it with genuine love, and it happened that I ended up getting money for it. I also work with other musicians from other genres, and I’m flexible to move with the times and learn new things,” he said.
When asked about retirement, he explained, “Many people normally ask me about when I’m retiring from music, and I normally tell them that I’m not employed, but I’m doing music because I love it. As long as I’m still able to sing and dance, I will not retire.” He credits his health and active stage presence to not smoking, avoiding alcohol, and having one partner. “Despite my age, Mzansi is still going to see me active on stage with my performances,” he added.
Unlike many younger artists who prefer releasing singles, Ihashi Elimhlophe continues to focus on albums. He explained, “The way I love my music, I have many unreleased songs because when I take my guitar, many songs automatically come. So, I can’t release one song because I have many unreleased songs that need to be released. I also believe in releasing an album because I believe that everyone has his/her favourite song.”
Ihashi Elimhlophe last released Ama Waza Waza in 2019. His new seven-track album, Ma-Afrika, is set for release on 31 October. Reflecting on his long career, he added, “I’m not sure about the number of the albums, but I think the new one will be the 30th album.”
With decades of experience and unwavering passion, Ihashi Elimhlophe continues to inspire fans and young musicians alike, proving that age and time cannot dim a true love for music.
