Stimela Marks 45 Years with New Album Through the Storm

South African music legends Stimela are back, celebrating 45 years of shaping the country’s musical landscape with their new album, Through the Storm. The band has remained a cultural institution, bridging generations from the elders who first embraced their iconic Slow Train sound to younger audiences discovering their music today.

The album’s lead single, More Than Just a Man, honors men who quietly hold families together, celebrating fathers, sons, and husbands. Lead vocalist Sam Ndlovu says, “This song celebrates men quietly shaping our communities – the fathers and sons who are the unsung pillars of our lives. It’s a story that resonates across every home.” The track blends Stimela’s signature soulful sound with heartfelt storytelling, reflecting themes of responsibility, love, and dedication.

Through the Storm delivers a mix of storytelling and musical craftsmanship. Key tracks include Ixilongo, a tender love ballad featuring acclaimed vocalist Unathi Nkayi; Juju Love Potion/Charm, a humorous and relatable track in true Stimela style; Pamberi ne Chimurenga, revisiting South Africa’s political struggles and triumphs before and after 1994; When Does It Stop, exploring resilience in the face of personal loss; Africa ni Moja, a call for continental unity; and Guitars of Chimurenga, showcasing the band’s masterful instrumentation and live energy.

Guitarist Ntokozo Zungu explains, “Stimela’s music is a living story. Every generation has found something to hold on to – a reflection of life, love, and hope. This album is our way of honoring the past while passing the torch to the future.” The album artwork depicts a steam train breaking through smoke and lightning, symbolizing the band’s enduring spirit and resilience. It emphasizes that Stimela represents more than music; it is history, culture, and a movement inspiring listeners across generations.

Through the Storm celebrates Stimela’s remarkable past while signaling the music still to come. More Than Just a Man stands as a declaration that the band remains central to South African music, shaping the soundtrack of generations and charting a bold path forward. Stimela’s return proves that even after 45 years, their music continues to connect, inspire, and endure.
