Benny Maverick Celebrates Debut Album ‘Valencia’ in Joburg

On Saturday, 15 November, an intimate Joburg venue came alive with colour, music, and energy as fans gathered to celebrate Benny Maverick’s debut album. The atmosphere was electric, reflecting the excitement of a milestone long anticipated in his career.

At the heart of the celebration was Benny Maverick, composed and confident, ready to share a personal chapter through his music. “Today we are here for my album celebration party and listening session. I decided to do something different, do it in Joburg. Introduce myself to different people at different markets. And the turnout has been amazing. It’s so beautiful in here,” he said.

Though he has been active in the industry for years, Valencia represents his first full-length album. “This is my debut album, so I’ve never actually dropped an album before. I’ve definitely dropped lots of music,” Benny Maverick explained. His last release was a 2023 EP, which kept fans engaged while he experimented, collaborated, and expanded his sound alongside the Guyama Brothers.

The album’s title carries deep significance. Benny Maverick named it Valencia in honour of his mother, celebrating her life and the foundation she built for him and his siblings. “It’s very important. For me, it’s sentimental because it’s my first album, and my first album is a gift to my mother. I can’t imagine naming it anything else. It’s to celebrate the life that my mother has lived and the life she has built for us as abafana bakhe,” he said.

Creating a debut album comes with pressure, but Benny Maverick approached the project with authenticity and clarity. “I definitely wanted it to be authentic. Everything that I do needs to be a reflection of who I am. I need to be true to myself. I felt no pressure because I’m in competition with nobody. I just want to make music and make an album that people are going to like, and that helps them understand me better,” he said.

His DJ sets also reflect this philosophy. “This is the sort of music that I play. So even when somebody books me, you must understand that my set is actually very similar to that.”

Rooted in Durban but embraced by Joburg, Benny Maverick emphasises the role of community in his creative journey. “It supports everything. There’s no I in team, there’s no one-man team. Anything I have, I’ve always worked with people. This is probably one of the very few projects that I’ve done myself, and it’s a testament to supporting each other,” he said.

The album also highlights his commitment to collaboration. He worked with mostly unknown artists, using his platform to give them exposure. “I’m not scared of taking chances, I’m not scared of investing in myself. And these artists that are on this album, I genuinely believe in them. So, whether they’re known or not, with the little platform and voice that I have, I wanted to use it to even create the smallest traction for the next person.”

As fans listened to the tracks for the first time, the night confirmed that Valencia marks the beginning of a new chapter for Benny Maverick. He hinted at what lies ahead: “Look forward to more music. The music video for Uyadladla is coming out. We’ve got shows planned internationally, events happening in Durban, and concerts. There’s a lot to be excited about from Benny Maverick, the DJ and producer, but also Benny Maverick the all-round businessman.”

With Valencia, Benny Maverick establishes himself not only as an artist but as a storyteller and community builder, setting the stage for a career poised for growth and impact.
