Mandisi Dyantyis to Headline 15th Annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture

South Africa’s rich musical and cultural heritage will take centre stage when acclaimed musician and storyteller Mandisi Dyantyis performs at the 15th Annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture on 20 November 2025. The event, hosted at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), will explore themes of faith, conflict, and humanity in today’s complex world.
Dyantyis, known for blending jazz, soul, and spiritual motifs, is expected to set a reflective and emotional tone for the afternoon. As an award-winning composer and trumpeter, his performance aligns with Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s belief that art and music are essential tools for healing a nation’s soul.
The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Shashi Tharoor, a global thought leader, author, and parliamentarian. Tharoor will examine the role of faith and moral courage in addressing modern-day strife, providing a framework for discussion that mirrors Tutu’s lifelong commitment to compassion and Ubuntu.
The lecture will also celebrate young voices through the Tutu Legacy Foundation Youth School Debate, conducted in partnership with the Metro East Education District (MEED). Janet Jobson, CEO of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, emphasised the importance of youth engagement, stating, “Our youth are not the leaders of tomorrow; they are the conscience of today.” The debate winners will be recognised during the event.
Adding a creative dimension, the lecture will feature the launch of submissions for the Letters of Peace campaign. This initiative invites global participants to share interpretations of peace through letters, poetry, art, or voice. Selected entries will be displayed in a live installation during the lecture. Submissions can be made via www.tutu.org.za/lettersofpeace or on social media using the hashtags #LettersOfPeace and #PeaceInAction.
