Meet Maganga Thishela: Maskandi Star and Exceptional Teacher

Khetha Mlotshwa, professionally known as Maganga Thishela, is proving that you can excel in multiple arenas. Hailing from KwaCeza, KwaZulu-Natal, the 31-year-old is making waves as a maskandi musician while also shaping young minds as a teacher at Nobiya High School in Jozini. Since 2017, he has maintained an impressive record in the classroom, achieving a 100% matric pass rate for geography and tourism, a feat that continues to draw admiration. This year, he is teaching geography exclusively and expects another perfect score.
“I was teaching geography and tourism from grades 10 to 12, but this year I focused only on geography. Since I started as a teacher, I’ve obtained a 100% matric pass rate,” Maganga said. “I love both teaching and singing, but teaching is my first love. Music sets me free, but I make sure to manage my time strictly. Time for teaching is for teaching, and time for music is for music.” He adds that from July, his focus shifts to revision, helping pupils prepare thoroughly for their exams.
Maganga’s music career began in 2014, and he has steadily built a loyal following. His 2016 debut EP, Hlanganani, was followed by the 2017 album Izinto Ziyenzeka. He continued with Zimane Ukwenzeka in 2019, and both Uyedela and Intombi Yomxhosa in 2022. In 2024, he released Bavale Iminyango, further cementing his place in the maskandi scene. Maganga attributes his success to evolving his style, noting that his earlier songs carried deeper messages that weren’t always widely understood, but resonated with listeners nonetheless.
Balancing music and teaching requires discipline, but Maganga manages it with clear boundaries. He dedicates his teaching time to the classroom, ensuring students receive full attention, and channels creativity into music during separate hours. This approach allows him to thrive in both fields, inspiring fans and students alike. His journey reflects the possibility of pursuing passion without compromising responsibility, a rare combination in today’s fast-paced world.
Maganga Thishela continues to prove that commitment, talent, and time management can create extraordinary results. Whether on stage or in the classroom, he is leaving a lasting impact. With another strong academic year expected and music that keeps evolving, Maganga remains one of South Africa’s most remarkable multi-talented figures, showing that success need not be limited to a single path.
