Sammie Heavens Steps Into the Spotlight With New Single ‘Not So Big On Romance’

Sammie Heavens, widely recognized as Nasty C’s girlfriend, is carving her own path in South Africa’s music scene. The KwaZulu-Natal star is set to release her new single, Not So Big On Romance, on Friday, a track that explores her personal experiences and emotions.

Heavens wrote the song during a challenging period in her life and describes it as an invasion of her privacy. While she worries that listeners will immediately connect the lyrics to her relationship with Nasty C, she believes the message is important to share.

Her artistic journey began with poetry, inspired by a birthday gift from her brother. “I used it to express my grief after losing my father, to avoid completely falling apart,” Heavens explains. Music has since become her creative outlet, allowing her to explore personal storytelling.

Heavens cites a wide range of influences. She recalls binge-watching Maya Angelou recite poetry, crediting Doja Cat for her love of rap, and attending Lordkez shows for inspiration. “All these women are great storytellers who make it easy to celebrate myself as I am,” she says. She emphasizes that her personal experiences remain the core of her work, even as books, films, and music shape her style.

Her music blends neo-soul, rap, and R&B, with raw and honest lyrics that resonate with her audience. Heavens explains that her emotional state fuels her creativity, making her art feel genuine and effortless.

Despite initial hesitation about pursuing rap, given her relationship with Nasty C, Heavens credits him for supporting her journey. “Collaborating with him is the best! He lets me do whatever feels good to me,” she says. She admires his work ethic and constant drive to create new projects, describing it as motivating for her own career.

The couple shares a two-year-old son, Oliver, who inspires both their creative and personal decisions. Heavens reflects on her motherhood journey as transformative, teaching her about herself while shaping her music.

Looking ahead, Heavens is determined to expand her creative horizons and produce meaningful projects. “When they list the most successful South Africans, I want to be on that list,” she declares. Not So Big On Romance marks another step in her evolution as an artist, demonstrating her ability to merge personal experience with compelling music.
